I know much of the country is white with snow right now, but with Valentine’s Day approaching, it’s time to have warm hearts even if the rest of us is freezing.
In honor of the romantic occasion, I have put together a little booklet called “From the Heart: Love Stories and Letters from the Civil War.”
These are true stories of enduring love that I have run across in doing research for my award-winning historical fiction novel Shades of Gray. Since this year marks the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War, I thought this topic would be very fitting.
In the book, I have included letters from some of the most well known Civil War leaders, including generals J.E.B. Stuart, Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson, and George Pickett, among others.
No matter how much or little you know about these important historical characters, I think you will be surprised at their heartfelt words of love.
If you are interested in receiving a copy of this e-book, please either leave a comment or email me directly with your email address, and feel free to follow my blog at http://www.jessicajamesblog.com/. I’ll be sending the book out the first week of February.
Hope everyone has a wonderful Valentine’s Day!

The unique thing about this book is that I assume the identity of my ancestor in all of his battles and prison misery. It was quite a challenge to match every detail that actually happened (dairies, letters, first-hand accounts) with a first person dramatized and riveting story of how I would have reacted in his situation. Best wishes in your work.
Thank you, I’ll take a look at your book. Looks interesting!
Hi Jessica,
I would love to read your “From the Heart: Love Stories and Letters from the Civil War”. I am a die-hard romantic, it has been a long, difficult winter and it would surely cheer me up to read these inspirational words from some of the historical figures I admire most!
Best regards & Happy Valentine’s Day
Hi Jessica! I would be honored for the opportunity to read your “From the Heart: Love Stories and Letters from the Civil War.” I just finished reading “Shades of Grey” and I thoroughly enjoyed every page of it. I found that is was extremely difficult to put down. Thank you for the fantastic travel through time and a chance to explorer our wonderful southern history. sanmacks at yahoo dot com.

What a wonderful idea. I love everything romantic, but I never thought of a book of Civil War love letters before.
Jessica,
I stumbled on your site this morning and immediately called my library to see if they had “Shades of Gray.” They do not have it, but will order it from a neighboring county for me! I can’t wait. I’ve always been a fan of historical fiction; my youngest son (a high school band director) is a REAL student of the Civil War – just took a trip to Gettysburg and has already been to several other battle sites. I would also love to have a copy of “From the Heart: Love Stories and Letters from the Civil War.”
Just a note: my husband and I were married on Valentine’s Day 1952 – sadly he passed away on July 6, 2007 – we had 55 Valentine anniversaries together – I sure miss my Valentine!
I’m at work today – my e-mail at home is jbrown1934@comcast.net. Please send the e-book there and thank you so very much.
