Since I didn’t have time to read any fiction this year, I thought I’d ask some book review bloggers to share their historical fiction favorites of 2009.
Mary reads all types of books, but her top historical fiction picks for 2009 are:
Cleopatra’s Daughter by Michelle Moran (ISBN-13: 978-0307409126)
Mary says: What happened after the demise of Cleopatra and Marc Antony? Here’s the story of what happened to their children. Excellent novel, beautifully written YA/Adult fiction that reads like adult fiction.
and
Hugh and Bess by Susan Higginbotham (ISBN: 978-1402215278)
Mary says: Wonderful story of 14th century England. Chivalry is not dead and the Plague is on the rise. Again, great story.

Keira runs this book review blog for readers by readers on romance novels. She’s been reading romance since she was in her teens and began blogging about romance so she could share her passion for her favorite genre.
Her top historical fiction pick is These Old Shades by Georgette Heyer (ISBN: 978-1402219474)
Keira says: I picked this book because it was a superbly written romance that I never wanted to end. I was so sad to see them sort everything out and declare themselves to one another because it meant the story was over.
Her second pick is Compromised by Kate Noble (ISBN: 978-0425226506)
Keira says: I picked this book because it’s fun and very tongue-in-cheek. To quote my review, “Gail Alton [the heroine] is unfashionably tall and unfashionably intelligent and unfashionably irksome.” She was fabulous!
Historical Tapestry is a blog run by a group of Historical Fiction readers. They read across a variety of genres and settings, and feature reviews, guest posts, HF news, events and much more!
Marg’s favorite historical fiction novel for 2009 is The Winter Sea by Susanna Kearsley.
Marg says: From the first moment I picked up this book, I was sucked into the worlds of historical fiction Carrie, as she in turn was drawn into the world of Sophia who lived in the early 1700s in Scotland! I have been recommending this book to anyone I talked to. One thing to bear in mind is that the title has now been changed to Sophia’s Secret. Regardless of which title the book has, the contents of the book are excellent, and I am looking forward to reading more from Susanna Kearsley next year.

Hope everyone finds great reads in 2010! Happy New Year!
Thanks for including me in this list! The only book mentioned that I haven’t read and loved this year was Compromised, so I have added that to my TBR list!
